Title: Flicka Ricka Dicka Go To Market
Author: Maj Lindman
Publisher: Albert Whitman & Company
Concepts: natural resources, markets, saving, earning money
Review: Triplets Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka had moved from the city to the countryside into a new home that was a long way from school. They decided to save up money so they could buy three new bicycles to get to school. What better way to take advantage of their new country home than to grow a vegetable garden and sell the produce at the local market. The endeavor would prove to be a learning experience that included ordering seeds from a catalog, preparing the soil, watering the seedlings, and getting their vegetables to the marketplace. Would they be able to sell enough produce to meet their savings goal?
This book, an installment in the popular Swedish series featuring those adventurous triplets, presents young readers with a good opportunity to think about savings and markets. With more families paying attention to organic produce, the book may provide an additional incentive to start a backyard garden and eat organic, home-grown fruits and vegetables.
