Title: Grace at Christmas
Author: Mary Hoffman
Illustrator: Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu
Publisher: Dial Books for Young Readers
Concepts: wants and needs, sharing, scarcity
Review: Grace loves celebrating Christmas and sees it as her favorite day of the year. All that changes, however, when she learns that a family friend and her daughter cannot get a flight to back to Trinidad and need a place to stay for the holidays. Grace would rather hang out a sign saying "no room" than share her home and her favorite holiday with two people she does not know very well.
This newest installment in the Grace picture book series provides an excellent opportunity to talk with young children about the importance of sharing during difficult situations when others are less well off. Exquisite illustrations and an adorable lead character give the book vibrancy and charm.
